It’s been four months since Charlotte FC kicked off a match, so you’d be forgiven if you’re a little out touch with what’s been going on. Not to worry because that’s exactly what the Definitive Charlotte FC Season Preview is for. Everything you need to know about Charlotte FC in preparation for the 2023 MLS season.
For Anton
The preseason started in heartbreak for Charlotte FC when defender Anton Walkes shockingly passed away in a tragic accident. Thousands of messages poured in support of Walkes and his family, a testament to the positive impact he had in not just his close circle but also those who admired him from a distance.
A Celebration of Life was hosted for Anton Walkes where family, friends, and fans were able to hear a fraction of the legacy he left. Head Coach Christian Lattanzio said that legacy of Anton is in the Club’s hand therefore this season was dedicated to him.
What Happened Last Season?
CLTFC had a respectable inaugural season where they just missed out on the playoffs finishing 9th in the Eastern Conference. Despite the group playing together for the first time ever and a midseason managerial change they were competitive up until the very last match.
Record: 13W-18L-3T, 42 points, 9th in East
New Arrivals
With several players departing between in summer and winter, Sporting Director Zoran Krneta along with Lattanzio and the Scouting Department identified and brought in reinforcements across the entire spine of the team.
Enzo Copetti: The 27-year-old Argentine striker arrived from Racing Club where he finished the season as the leading scorer in Argentina’s first division. His nickname “El Tanque, The Tank” derives from his physicality and relentlessness both on offense and defense.
Ashley Westwood: A Premier League veteran who spent ten seasons in the English topflight, Westwood is as experienced as they come. The English midfielder is a passing specialist that thrives at spraying long passes and providing pinpoint delivery on set pieces.
Bill Tuiloma: The New Zealand defender is no stranger to league having accumulated 112 appearances playing for the Portland Timbers. He brings a toughness, tenacity, but also offensive capabilities with his comfort on the ball and as a goal scoring threat.
Preseason
The team wrapped up its first full preseason under coach Lattanzio that was both physically and mentally tough but resulted in several positives. Charlotte went undefeated throughout five preseason matches, including two against Birmingham Legion and Charleston Battery that were hosted at Bank of America Stadium in front of fans.
All the preseason work has led up to this moment. The 2023 MLS season begins Saturday, February 25th and Charlotte opens up their sophomore season at home against the New England Revolution at 7:30 pm.
